Folk singer Katy Kirby grew up in an Evangelist family in a small town in Texas – and therefore, without any cultural pop or rock music references. It was only when she began studying at university in Nashville that she discovered music by artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird and Coldplay. She began to question her faith and ended up completely breaking away from it. Church music inspired her, however, helping the former choir singer to develop her very own style on her debut album "Cool Dry Place", released in 2021. In the song "Traffic", Katy Kirby uses autotune, for example, while she intersperses her ballad "Portals" with metallic sounds and clinking glass so as to break up any all-too harmonious moments. Katy Kirby's sense for the subtle, timid and unexpected also turns her lyrics into short poetic stories that draw you in.
