In 2018, BERWYN wrote the songs for his debut album "Demotape/Vega" in just two weeks, without knowing how or where he would release them. Born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in East London, the rapper talks on his album about the time he was made homeless by his mother getting sent to jail because of her residence status, and how he has been affected by poverty. His live performance of "Glory" on the "Later... With Jools Holland" show opened up new doors for him amid the Black Lives Matter protests in June 2020 – and attracted the attention of Drake, a place on the BBC "Sound of 2021" list and a nomination for the Mercury Prize. His second album "Tape 2/Fomalhaupt" followed last September – a conceptual album reduced to piano and trap rhythms dealing with issues of loneliness and the constant anxiety that his residence permit will not be extended.
